Edmonton zones cancelled due to lack of teams

What if they held a zone playdown and nobody came?

As Con Griwkowsky reports in the Edmonton Sun,  only seven teams signed up for zone playdowns in that fair city so there was no need to hold any playdowns. All the teams got a pass to the Northern Alberta playdown.

At around 8 p.m. on Friday night, the seven teams entered in the Edmonton area men’s playdowns got a phone call. They were informed that the event was off and that all seven teams would get a direct entry into the northern Alberta playdowns in Camrose.
So, the teams came to the rink Saturday just to sit around, have a few pops and sign their forms for the northerns.
“I got the call and they said there was a couple of zones that nobody had entered, so,” said veteran skip Wade White. “I was actually bringing in a spare because one of my guys had to work this weekend.”

Seems to be a sign of the times in curling these days. No longer are the guys from the club willing to give up their money and time to get hammered by elite curlers. So in essence, the curling is getting better but the gap between the good teams and the knee-sliders from the Thursday night league is getting wider.
